One of the remarkable traits of our University is our spirit of community. This spirit began with the founding faculty, staff and students at University of St. Thomas, and our time-honored Mardi Gras traditions play a part in the story.
In 1947, the first Mardi Gras dance was held in the small ballroom on the 3rd floor of Link-Lee Mansion. By 1950, Mardi Gras at UST had grown into a โMardi Gras Extravaganzaโ held at the Sam Houston Coliseum with 15,000 attendees. University President Fr. Vincent J. Guinan used his Hollywood connections to recruit celebrities to serve as honorary kings and queens. The likes of Pat OโBrien, Ann Blyth and Bob Hope traveled to Houston to serve in these roles.
With these Mardi Gras Extravaganzas, the young University of St. Thomas rose in prominence as newspapers and community leaders assisted in promoting the event.
Today, the 5th Annual Giving Day is being held on Fat Tuesday, February 21, as a tribute to our Mardi Gras legacy. Like our Mardi Gras traditions, UST Giving Days bring our entire community, far and wide, together on one day in support of our University.
Will you join us this Giving Day by supporting a cause that is meaningful to you?
