About

Increase the SEM endowment to maintain and sustain the microscope for many years to come! The first $15,000 in gifts will be tripled by generous matching donors.

The Physics Department at Hamline University is seeking to raise $50,000 during Piper Funding Week to continue to build the endowment for the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Please make a gift today, help us maintain and sustain this instrument so it can remain accessible to the entire Hamline University community in supporting research, education, and community service initiatives.

The SEM significantly impacts various fields, benefiting students, faculty, and staff in anthropology, biochemistry, chemistry, digital media arts, forensic science, physics, and more. Its pivotal role in designing devices like batteries, supercapacitors, and solar cells addresses environmental concerns, vital for EPA-awarded national student design competition projects, including lead content determination in water. It also supports the Renewable Energy Innovations workshop for high school science educators, as well as Renewable Energy Camp and Microscope Adventure Camp for high school students. In November 2020, our Hamline community’s support enabled us to acquire and install the Zeiss EVO 15 Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). In the following years, the Hamline community also helped us build an endowed fund to maintain the SEM. To address inflation and increased expenses, in the fall of 2023 we decided to begin raising an additional $162,000 for the SEM endowed fund, and make the overall goal for that endowment $400,000. This ensures ongoing maintenance for the instrument so it can remain accessible to the entire Hamline University community and support research, education, and community service initiatives.

In December 2023 we raised $13,000 through crowdfunding toward that goal thanks to a generous matching gift from Steve Nelson ’85.

During Piper Funding Week, two generous anonymous donors will be running simultaneous matches for the first $15,000 donated, which will triple the impact of those donations!

Make a gift today, help us meet and beat our Piper Funding Week Goal of $50,000, and put us that much closer to reaching our overall goal of $400,000.

Your consideration in supporting this pivotal initiative is sincerely appreciated. For inquiries or more information, please contact Professor Lifeng Dong at ldong03@hamline.edu.
