Gifts to Department of Chemistry - Meet Janie contribute to...
Janie ’25 found her confidence in a research lab at Hope, a place she’s made her second home on campus.
The senior from Northville, Mich., has spent most of her time at Hope in a chemistry research lab. “I did two years of organic chemistry research on the effects of different substituents on novel long wavelength azo dyes with Dr. Jason Gillmore,” she explained. “Now, I’m working with Dr. Joanne Stewart to research chemistry education at the collegiate level. We hope to publish our findings, connect different institutions and increase the effectiveness of each group.”
Janie was impressed with the excellence offered by the department. Almost right away, she found herself in Dr. Gillmore’s lab. “He reached out to me as a freshman and encouraged my involvement in research as early as possible. He helped me take my first step towards academic growth outside of the classroom,” she said.
She hopes to work as an environmental consultant to address environmental challenges and help organizations implement sustainable solutions. Work in the classroom and the lab have prepared her well for this career goal. “Participating in research helped me grow as a student and person,” she said. “It has increased my confidence, leadership and problem solving skills.”
Janie believes that she and her peers thrive because of donors like you. “We appreciate your generosity more than you know. It inspires me because your selflessness fosters a greater sense of community and support for everyone,” she explained.
Will you ignite a student’s confidence and inspire the next generation of scientists like Janie with your gift today?
