Support the Department of Political Science
The mission of the Department of Political Science is to promote scholarship and responsible citizenship among students at West Chester University. We provide a comprehensive curriculum that exposes students to the principal subfields of the discipline (US Government and International Relations) and encourages critical analysis and communication skills. The ten full time faculty actively prepare students for careers in government/public service, law, teaching, business and international affairs and admission to various advanced degree programs. Through internship programs, service learning, simulations, and other curricular and co-curricular activities, the Department offers students experience in politics, government and law. Actively involved in research, teaching and applied scholarship, the political science faculty serves as mentors to students seeking academic challenge and civic involvement in an environment that values diversity.

To honor the legacy of the first woman in WCU’s Political Science Department, Dr. Frauke Schnell, and her contributions as a professor of Political Science from 1992-2020, this scholarship is designated for a student whose scholarship and/or leadership on campus or in local community organizations promotes feminist ideals, gender equality and/or women's rights.
Dr. Schnell was dedicated scholar who was committed to making the world a better place. As a professor of political science at West Chester University she mentored numerous students and colleagues from all over the world. Dr. Schnell developed a study abroad program with the Gustav Stresemann Institute in Germany that spanned West Chester University’s reach in the international community. Additionally, Dr. Schnell led the way for many young professional women in the academic community by not only persevering, but also succeeding in a male-dominated world.
The Award is given at the discretion of the Department of Political Science. Applicants would need to submit a resume showing their scholarship and/or leadership in the West Chester Community. Applicants would also require a letter of recommendation from a faculty member for consideration. The Award will be announced in the spring of each year and be part of the College of the Sciences and Mathematics award ceremony in mid-April.
