For over 50 years, Shoals Marine Lab on Appledore Island has been a proud leader in marine science, education, and research. As the largest undergraduate-serving marine lab in the country, we pride ourselves on our student-driven focus. SML offers a wide range of marine science and sustainbility-related topics to explore—from oceanography to shark biology, marine parasitology, and seabirds. Hands-on learning sets us apart from classroom-based courses, allowing students to see themselves as active scientists and gives them an enriched experience that they will carry with them in their future careers.
Funds raised during The (603) Challenge go directly to support our students. 80% of Shoals students need financial aid to participate in our programs, meaning students need your support to access transformational experiences at Appledore Island! We have our own bonus challenge this year: 100 donors unlocks $10,000 from John Morison '76 and Lynne Dougherty '78, and 150 donors unlock a transformative $100,000 from an anonymous underwriter. Help us reach our goal and create new opportunities with your gift!
All donors who make an online gift on the last day of the challenge, Friday, April 12 (starting at 12:00:01 a.m. ET) will receive an equal portion of $75,000 added to their gift. Only donors who have not already given to this year’s challenge qualify. The bonus amount tacked on to your gift will be dependent on the number of donors that qualify and will be calculated after the challenge is over. Whether you make one or multiple gift transactions and/or give to multiple areas, your bonus amount will be split accordingly.

The first 1,500 donors who give online on Thursday, April 11, and haven't already made a gift to this year's challenge, in a total amount containing the numerals 6, 0, and 3 will receive a $50 bonus added to their gift designation(s).
