Rx for Reading Detroit

Rx for Reading Detroit is on a mission—to fill kids’ lives with stories, spark imaginations, and make sure every child has the chance to fall in love with reading. Since 2014, this University of Detroit Mercy–sponsored nonprofit has shared more than 250,000 new and gently loved books with children and families across Metro Detroit. Our Detroit Mercy undergraduates have also spent countless hours reading aloud with preschoolers and elementary students, proving that the magic of books is even better when shared.

Our goal is simple (and joyful!): get high-quality children’s books into the hands of kids who need them most and support families in reading together. Because when kids read, doors open—and opportunity grows.

Built on the belief that EVERY child deserves the right to read, Rx for Reading thrives on true community spirit. We live by the “it takes a village” approach, partnering with more than 100 amazing community organizations—from health clinics and Head Start programs to shelters and churches—to bring literacy everywhere kids and families gather.
