The Mental Health Initiative for Stress and Trauma (MIST) is advancing groundbreaking mental health research to deliver new treatments to those who need them most. Your support this Giving Day will help accelerate progress through clinical trials — to save and change lives!
MIST was created in memory of Mike McClay — a beloved husband, father of two, and friend to many — who tragically died by suicide after battling depression following a concussion. His friends and family turned to UCalgaryβs Hotchkiss Brain Institute for answers, and MIST was created.
By studying the effects of both emotional stress and physical trauma on the brain, better interventions can be discovered, leading to healthier outcomes.

MIST is led by Dr. Matthew Hill, PhD, a world-leading educator and researcher in mental health and stress. Dr. Hill and the MIST team are exploring a critical, yet largely undiscovered, area of neuroscience. The initiative focuses on the advancement of foundational research, accelerated clinical trials and community outreach, which together serve to reduce the burden of mental health disorders for individuals and those who care about them.
Thank you, alumni donors! Your support unlocked an extra $2,500 for this fund - Mental Health Initiative for Stress and Trauma (MIST) Chair!
