The Ashley Schiff Preserve is a cherished piece of Stony Brook University, dedicated to the memory of Dr. Ashley Schiff, a beloved professor of political science and an ardent naturalist. Dr. Schiff, who tragically passed away in 1969, often walked these woods with his students, fostering a deep appreciation for the natural world. In his honor, this 26-acre woodland, adorned with oak and apple trees, was designated as a “forever wild” preserve in 1970 by former U.S. Interior Secretary Stewart Udall and former Stony Brook University President John S. Toll.
Today, the Ashley Schiff Preserve continues to serve as a vital sanctuary for wildlife and a valuable resource for the university community. Your support will help ensure that this legacy endures for generations to come.
By contributing, you will:
- Honor Dr. Schiff’s vision: Safeguard the preserve’s “forever wild” status, ensuring its protection for future generations.
- Support student learning: Fund scholarships and research projects that connect students with nature.
- Enhance the preserve: Contribute to the maintenance of trails, nature stations and educational signage.
- Foster community engagement: Support educational programs and events that inspire a love for nature in all ages.
Join us in preserving this special place for generations to come.
