At Stony Brook, we know that complex conditions involving the brain can affect people of all ages. Many community members have had a personal experience with one or more conditions impacting their own life or that of an immediate family member or a close friend. In the U.S., data indicates that over 50 million Americans suffer from brain disorders, resulting in an annual economic cost of over $500 billion. Closer to home, brain and neurological disorders are the third-leading cause of death among Suffolk County residents and a leading cause of adult disability. Stony Brook’s Neurosciences Institute is working to change that.
Our Neurosciences Institute is the regional leader in scientific research and the diagnosis and treatment of a full range of brain, neurological, psychiatric and behavioral disorders in adults and children. Our experts focus on various conditions, including Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders, Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, ALS, autism spectrum disorders, epilepsy, stroke, depression, anxiety and schizophrenia.
In addition to providing world-class clinical care, our dedicated faculty train the clinicians and neuroscientists of tomorrow. They provide a challenging yet supportive environment that prepares them to practice in various clinical and academic settings and continue the institution’s legacy of discovery.
Your gift will support the overall work of our Neurosciences Institute’s four pillar departments: Neurobiology and Behavior, Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry and Behavioral Health. Philanthropy helps us pursue groundbreaking research, provide educational programs for neuroscience residents and fellows, purchase equipment to keep us on the leading edge of brain imaging and more.
