Evan R. Liblit was an innovator, teacher and lifelong student of recycling and waste management. Always anxious to explore new technologies and techniques, he quickly learned and understood that his field was subject to fiscal pressures, legislative compromise and the public’s willingness to cooperate. He was a pioneer in the field, organizing the first office paper recycling program in federal buildings, implementing one of Long Island’s first town-wide recycling programs in Babylon and overseeing the startup of a 750-ton-per-day resource recovery facility.
Today’s students of environmental management face similar challenges that require ingenuity and passion to tackle. In 1997, Stony Brook University recognized Evan Liblit’s contributions to solid waste management and recycling by establishing a memorial scholarship supporting future generations of environmental leaders. To date, the Evan R. Liblit Memorial Endowed Award has supported almost 60 students affiliated with the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University who have demonstrated a passion for sustainability and waste management. With your help, the fund will benefit many students for years to come!
