The School of Dental Medicine has chosen the School of Dental Medicine Scholarship for Students From Dental Health Professional Shortage Areas in New York as our initiative. Together, we can assist aspiring dentists who come from dental HPSAs.
Thirty-eight percent of upstate counties are considered a Dental Health Professional Shortage Area — or one dentist for every 5,000 residents or more. As one of two state dental schools, the SDM is increasing efforts to alleviate this disparity by recruiting students from these areas, as they are five times more likely to practice there.
Educational debt is a top reason why students from dental HPSAs do not return home. By making a contribution, students from these communities will have the financial support they need to pursue their careers in dentistry and ultimately practice in areas of the state that need oral healthcare services the most.
Thank you very much for your pledge. Together we can make an indelible difference in the lives of underrepresented students and the communities that they will serve.
