Chair's Message:
Welcome to the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Renaissance School of Medicine (RSOM) at Stony Brook University, a flagship of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. The RSOM is the leading public academic medical institution not only on Long Island but throughout New York state. Whether you are here as a patient, student, healthcare professional or faculty or staff member, you will find that we are passionate about accomplishing our mission: to serve as dedicated, empathetic healers and deliver the highest level of care while advancing research and education.
Our department achieves its mission through integrating EMS providers, ultrasound experts, critical care specialists, international health experts, a robust engaged toxicology service and a cutting-edge clinical informatics program that focuses on data expertise to enhance quality and safety. We proudly educate the youngest minds, from their high school years all the way through their fellowship completion, and collaborate on groundbreaking research in neuroscience, trauma, biomedical engineering and artificial intelligence.
Our results speak for themselves. When you enter our Emergency Department (ED), you can trust that you are in a place dedicated to helping people from all walks of life. In 2023 alone, we treated over 112,000 patients, and the hospital is a designated Level I Trauma Center for both adults and children. We also provide specialized services, including a Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) and the state-recognized Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) program. Our Mobile Stroke Unit Program — the first of its kind on Long Island — ensures faster, lifesaving care for stroke patients.
Our team is incredibly honored by the recognition we have received for our efforts. Our ED holds Silver/Level 2 Accreditation for Geriatric Emergency Care and Gold/Level 1 Accreditation for Pain and Addiction Care from the American College of Emergency Physicians. In addition, we were recently honored with the 2024 Lantern Award from the Emergency Nurses Association. Such achievements reflect our unwavering commitment to excellence and the quality of care we provide.
As chair for the Department of Emergency Medicine, which includes Eastern Long Island, Southampton, tele-emergency medicine and immediate care facilities, it is my pleasure to welcome all of you to a dynamic environment where compassionate care, innovative education and world-class expertise come together.
