The Japan Center at Stony Brook, established in January 2003, serves as a vital bridge between the university and the local community, fostering education and research on Japan, its culture and society and the lives of Japanese and Japanese Americans. For over 20 years, the Center has proudly organized the annual Japan Center Essay Competition, sponsored by Canon U.S.A.; the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, which attracts hundreds of participants each year; and Japanese language tutoring for local high school students for a modest fee. The Japan Center has also contributed to disaster relief efforts by raising over $50,000 for the victims of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
In addition, the Japan Center has hosted lectures covering topics such as Japanese art, literature, culture, traditions, society and geopolitical issues, as well as the history, experiences and contributions of Japanese Americans. These lectures are open to the on-campus and off-campus communities and are offered for free, made possible by the generous support of local donors. To keep this lecture series accessible to the public, we need your support. Your contribution, no matter the amount, will help us continue offering these enriching lectures to the community. Thank you for your support!
