The Department of Hispanic Languages and Literature reflects the growing impact and intellectual vitality of Hispanic and Latino cultures both internationally and within the U.S. Our BA, MA and PhD are designed to serve a broad constituency of students with courses devoted to the language, linguistics and literary and visual cultures of Spain, Latin America and Latinx communities in the United States. We are especially committed to the inclusion, representation and visibility of the Latino and Indigenous community and their cultures at Stony Brook University and on Long Island. Our department is proud to be the home of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Initiative (NAIS), which now offers a minor in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Hispanic Languages and Literature is a leader in promoting upward social mobility with a diverse group of faculty and graduate students who serve as role models for undergraduates and play a crucial role in their academic success. HLL is fundraising to provide scholarships for our undergraduate and graduate students. These scholarships will support research, community outreach and public engagement.
Research in our department falls within the expanding field of humanities and social sciences. It requires a diverse set of skills from our students, including languages, history and critical theory, and uses different approaches and methodologies, depending on the specific area of study. Examples of research in our department cover a broad array of subjects: literature and film of Latin America, Spain and migrant communities, Latino and Indigenous cultural production, the interconnections of environment and culture, scholarly editions, the audio-visual narratives of social media and Spanish applied linguistics, to name just a few.
Please make a gift to HLL so that we can create six yearly Research and Engagement Fellowships:
- Three for advanced undergraduates in Spanish
- Three for graduate (MA/PhD) students
These fellowships will provide a yearly stipend of $1,000 for undergraduate students and $2,000 for graduate students to work as assistants in faculty-led projects involving research, community outreach and multimedia publications.
We truly appreciate your generosity.
