Lehigh established the Military Scholarship Fund in 1996 as a part of the “Preserving the Vision” campaign. The scholarship is an endowed scholarship. As of June 30, 2024, the principal was $41,568 and the annual spending distribution (payout) was $2,409.
The scholarship is awarded annually based on financial need and scholastic achievement with preference given to ROTC Students, veterans of the armed forces (USA, USAF, USN, USMC, USCG) and/or children of veterans. The most recent scholarship recipient is the daughter of a veteran. She is a part of Lehigh’s first recruited women’s wrestling team. She says, “Without scholarships, I would not be attending Lehigh…I am the first in my family to get a higher education in the traditional sense…During my junior year when I began looking for colleges, my dad suddenly passed.”
On Giving Day 2023 we raised about $25,000 exceeding our goal to at least double the principal of the Military Scholarship Fund.
The 2025 Giving Day challenge is to attract 100 donors and once again double the scholarship principal.
To support the Challenge, the following leadership gifts have been pledged:
- 50 donations will release a gift of $250 by Bill Cavanagh
- 65 donations will release a gift of $500 by Jay Allen
- 80 donations will release gifts totaling $750 by Fred Weed and Peter Ciampa
- 100 donations will release gifts totaling $2,250 by Chuck Kleintop, Andy Segal, D’Arcy Roper, and Bob Scotch
The Alumni Memorial Building is dedicated to 1921 Lehigh graduates who fought in WWI. Surely there are thousands more Lehigh veterans, both named and unnamed. For one, the Class of 1967 has at least 115 known veterans among its ranks. While we cannot count, or name, all of Lehigh’s veterans, we can honor them through a memorial gift to the Military Scholarship Fund.
