CFL student consulting is one of Hope College’s most powerful models of experiential learning—delivering outstanding value to organizations while shaping the next generation of servant leaders. Since its launch in 2008, the program has completed nearly 300 real-world consulting projects for both for-profit and nonprofit partners, turning classroom learning into meaningful impact.
Each semester, multidisciplinary student teams tackle complex challenges in areas such as marketing, operations, finance, fundraising, IT, human resources, and strategy. Guided by a clear statement of work, projects conclude with professional-level presentations and reports that organizations can immediately put to use—often helping them grow, adapt, or serve their communities more effectively.
What makes CFL student consulting exceptional is its leadership model. Every team of three to four students is led by an experienced practitioner coach and often supported by a subject-matter expert. This structure ensures high-quality outcomes for clients while providing students with deep mentoring and real accountability—without placing added burden on the organizations they serve.
For students, the program is transformative. As a paid position, student consultants collaborate with other majors while working closely with accomplished professionals to apply their skills. Through this hands-on experience, students clarify their vocational calling, build confidence, and develop leadership skills that distinguish them long after graduation.
Donor support is the key that allows CFL student consulting to extend its impact to nonprofits at no cost. While corporate partners pay a standard project fee, nonprofit projects are made possible entirely through generosity—enabling mission-driven organizations to access professional consulting and empowering students to serve the common good.
