About

When Belem decided to enroll her middle school son in Hope College’s summer Step Up program, she never thought the results would be so impressive.

Trying to make friends, learning how to grow up, and managing seemingly endless piles of homework all add up to create difficult roadblocks for many middle school students. Belem’s son Santiago knew this feeling all too well.

She saw firsthand how her son struggled to make friends. She would watch as he sat in his room spending time by himself instead of playing with other children from school or the neighborhood. “He is not the kind of child who seeks time with friends or interacts much with children at his school,” Belem said. He’s an active student with a fondness for origami, reading and riding his bicycle wherever he can.

But Santiago was struggling in school. That’s when his mother decided to enroll him in Hope College’s summer Step Up program. From that day forward, everything changed.

Santiago excelled under the strong guidance of the Step Up program and its mentors. He developed a strong relationship with his mentor who provided one-on-one tutoring, pushed him to understand complex concepts and boosted his confidence. “Santiago has encountered mentors that aren't just tutors; they’ve become role models who have helped him gain a sense of confidence and develop essential life skills,” Belem shared with pride.

His mentor even encouraged him to continue exploring his love for drawing. As an artistic student, Santiago thrived working with his well-rounded mentor.

As for making new friends? Santiago spent the summer growing academically and personally. He played plenty of fun sports outside with his new friends. “I saw Santiago take a chance and participate in different activities at Step Up. To see this brought a sense of peace to my heart and mind,” Belem said.

“Step Up’s summer program is a place where my son grew academically and personally, under the watchful eye of caring staff,” she added. “Step up has provided a safe space for Santiago to be himself and enjoy time with friends.”
