Larry credits the Hope-Western Prison Education Program (HWPEP) with saving his life.
“When everyone else around me could only see the worst in me, HWPEP saw the best in me,” he said.
Larry, who is studying the history of Christianity, restorative justice, communication theory and leadership, is one of the many incarcerated students at Muskegon Correctional Facility who is receiving an undergraduate degree through HWPEP.
When he’s not busy with his coursework, Larry fills his days by serving as the treasurer of the HWPEP Student Voice Council, attending multiple Bible studies each week and reading whatever he can. “Currently, I’m reading ‘How to Day Trade for a Living,’” he shared.
Larry chose to attend college while in prison to connect with a larger community. “HWPEP will link me with a community in prison and, upon my release, that is positive, encouraging and productive,” he said.
He’s been impressed by the excellence of the program. “I am being equipped and challenged to be better, not merely for myself, but for my community and everyone I encounter,” he explained. “I will be better upon my release, with better opportunities.
“HWPEP came in on their own dime when others did not. The program, leadership, professors, donors and fellow students are very involved. They truly care and they’re interested in helping us become better people. This is done out of love,” he added.
Larry can’t thank donors like you enough. “Words cannot express how thankful I am, but I will try,” he said. “I am eternally grateful. The Bible says that, ‘If you give even a cup of water to the least of mine, you did it to me!’ The Lord appreciates your generosity and so do I. I will do well to honor your gift.”
