About

Avery ’27 has been committed to helping others for as long as she can remember, and the Department of Social Work and Sociology has given her the perfect outlet.

“I have a strong desire to help people through connection and service, while helping empower those around me to take action,” said the sophomore from Grand Haven, Mich., who has chosen to double major in social work and sociology at Hope.

Her coursework has allowed her to study institutions designed to provide this help at the micro level. “I want to understand how these institutions operate in our society today,” she added.

The well-rounded excellence of the social work and sociology department equips her with all she needs. “The knowledge our professors bring to each of their classes creates a culture of learning that promotes an in-depth exploration of ideas and fosters a sense of community,” she shared. “They take the time to get to know the students personally, and we can feel their desire to see us grow and succeed.”

This community inspires Avery. It has affirmed her desire to follow a career path that allows her to create positive change for people who need help.

Though she won’t be graduating for more than two years, Avery hopes to earn her accelerated master’s degree in social work and then pursue a career as a case manager for an assisted-living facility or work at a nonprofit. She’s also interested in becoming a macro practitioner to focus on community-level interventions that address large-scale issues affecting groups of people or entire communities.

Avery is thankful for donors like you. “It means a great deal to those who work and study within the department,” she said. “Your donation will help continue important programs and other activities within the department and allow students to reach their fullest potential as undergraduates!”

Avery sees acts of kindness, like giving to the department, as something that can create a tidal wave of generosity and love.

Will you make a gift today and set off a wave of real change in the world through students studying sociology and social work at Hope?
