About

Kayla’s unique journey to America inspired her cutting-edge research on adoption experiences at Hope College.

“I was adopted from China,” the recent Hope graduate shared. “Adoption is such a personal topic to me and it is why I was interested in assisting Dr. Emily Helder’s lab. Being part of this lab was one of the highlights of my time at Hope.”

During her time at Hope, Kayla assisted Dr. Helder on two research initiatives. “I performed qualitative research on two projects: WISE Up! and Memorable Messages. WISE Up! is a curriculum used to teach children how to navigate intrusive or insensitive comments they may receive about their adoption and how to foster healthy communication between the adoptive parent(s) and their adoptee(s). Memorable Messages focuses on how these words impact an adoptee's emotional well-being, identity development, relationships and religious affiliation,” she explained.

Kayla graduated in December with a degree in psychology. While at Hope, she made the most of her education by studying abroad in Italy and serving as the president of the Asian Student Union. She plans to pursue graduate studies in either occupational therapy or social work.

Her experiences at Hope, including excellence in the psychology department, have prepared her well for the future. “It is clear that the faculty believes in the mission of Hope College and wants to see students succeed,” Kayla said.

She credits donors like you for inspiring her to continue adding to her field of research that she hopes will positively impact adoptees and the greater society.

“Thank you for the opportunity to participate in undergraduate research. I believe that what Hope College offers is truly unique,” she said.

Today, your gifts will help students like Kayla have access to world-class research and other opportunities through the Department of Psychology. Will you inspire the next generation of students today?
