About

As soon as she graduates in May, Ava ’25 will be a published author thanks to her work with the Women’s and Gender Studies program

The senior from West Lafayette, Ind., worked alongside Dr. Sarah Kornfield on her publication, “Feminism and Feminist Movements in America: An Encyclopedia of Ideals and Activism.”

“I wrote two entries in this book, and Dr. Kornfield expects it to be published in May,” enthused Ava, who is a chemistry and women’s and gender studies double major..

“I am super passionate about women's rights, oppressed populations and the barriers they face in the U.S. and around the world,” said the senior, who plans on attending medical school in the fall. “I wanted to become more aware of the oppressive systems in our world and how I can advocate for those whose voices are marginalized. I am very passionate about activism and advocacy.”

Ava recognizes that her studies have provided her with the tools she needs to translate her beliefs into action. “Being a WGS major has given me the knowledge on both activism groups and critical theory that can help me to better advocate for vulnerable populations,” she added.

She’s thankful for the culture of excellence the Women’s and Gender Studies program has created on campus. She believes the department has created a safe space for students to create meaningful and lasting relationships.

While Ava is impressed with all her program professors, she singled out Dr. Kornfield. “She is extremely passionate about what she teaches and she has helped me become both a better student and person,” she said.

The generosity of others in their time, money and gifts motivates Ava in her personal actions. “In our world, sometimes it’s hard to get out of our own heads and do unselfish acts,” she explained. “The generosity of those around me inspired me to volunteer for Momsbloom, a postpartum support organization for families in need.”

Will you help inspire and educate the next generation of students with your gift to the Women’s and Gender Studies program today?
