Gifts to Department of Theatre - Meet Danai contribute to...
Danai ’25 is a natural born storyteller. Everything she does at Hope College is done to further her storytelling knowledge. Because of the endless opportunities provided by the theatre department and her talent, she’s traveled the world to expand her horizons.
Originally from Harare, Zimbabwe, the senior theatre and global studies double major intentionally created a well-rounded course of study through numerous opportunities on campus and abroad.
“I have studied in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts,” Danai said. “Last semester, I interned and studied method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute’s New York Campus. This semester I’m producing and writing a new play called ‘International’ with Alegría Guzman ’25. Additionally, I had the opportunity to perform as an acting intern in 2023 and company manager in 2024 for Hope Repertory Theatre.”
Danai hasn’t focused on just one element of the theatrical arts. While she has performed on stage numerous times and even won a prestigious Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Distinguished Performance national award, she’s also served as a stage manager, light board operator, sound board operator and publicity team member for the department. She’s exceptionally busy and her drive is matched only by her talent.
Once she graduates in May, Danai plans on pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in acting. “I have spent the last four years discovering the kind of artist I am,” she shared. “Now I want to channel my energy and passion into developing and growing as an actor.”
She loves the theatre department faculty’s commitment to excellence. “They’re incredibly supportive,” she explained. “Professors like Michelle Bombe and Rhett Luedtke really make the effort to get to know students individually and encourage them in the direction they feel is true to them. I would not be where I am today without the generosity of heart of the department’s faculty members.”
Danai is moved by this kind of generosity. She recognizes the critical impact it's had on her journey to graduation. “The generosity of others has helped me get to where I am — generosity in wisdom, resources and kindness has helped me through many difficult times and pushed me toward my dreams. Each of my achievements is a reflection of that generosity and serves to honor those who have supported me along my way,” she said.
