Birmingham-Southern College's Psychology major provides students with a strong foundation in statistics and research methods, as well as experience in areas of study. This education prepares students for careers in research, academia, counseling, and many other fields where an understanding of human behavior is essential.
“At BSC, you get a level of intimate support you’re not going to get at a large university. For anyone who wants to be prepared for graduate school, you need that mentorship. What stood out so much to me was that every step of the way I had somebody to consult with, who was readily available and willing to talk. My professors literally were with me every step of the way.” – Ameet Bosmia ‘11, Psychology, School psychologist and program area specialist, Shelby County Schools, Pelham, Ala.
Dr. Jessica Allen, Professor of Psychology, on a recent grant award for the department from Dementia Friendly Communities, “The award will allow us to create what is believed to be the first Dementia Friendly Community Initiative in Western Birmingham. Specifically, the goals of the project are to provide education and empathy training to undergraduate students, informal and formal caregivers of persons with dementia and to provide a new service learning program to an adult day center in Western Birmingham (i.e. McCoy Adult Day Care). Most uniquely, the project includes a cutting edge virtual reality technology, created by Embodied Labs. To our knowledge, the aging VR lab at BSC would be the first in Birmingham and one of only two in the state.” The grant was awarded by Dementia Friendly Communities as part of their initiative to increase "awareness of the growing problem of dementia in Alabama by conducting activities and programs around the state that will assist in providing much needed information for caregivers and those suffering with dementia." This project is in collaboration with BSC graduate, Dr. Daniel Potts ’88
