Media and Film Studies at Birmingham-Southern College is an innovative, interdisciplinary program that is grounded in Film and Media Studies while being informed by other disciplines in the social sciences, the humanities, and the arts. The program also stresses the ways in which academic study and artistic practices are mutually informative. Students in the MFS program develop and apply their skills in critical thinking, oral communication, and persuasive writing, in the true liberal arts tradition.
“My liberal arts education really focused on writing, which is an extremely beneficial skill to have after graduation. It was also a well-rounded education, allowing for and even demanding interdisciplinary experiences.” – Elizabeth Hagale ’13, Social Media Manager, Mindvolt
“When I was a senior in high school, I had my heart set on going up north to Vermont, but an Admissions counselor at BSC kept calling me and I finally decided to answer. He stayed on the phone with me for an hour answering all my questions. When I talk to alumni at events, their faces light up. They ask questions – “What are you majoring in? How is school going? What do you want to do in the future?” – and they’re excited. It’s so genuine. They really do care about BSC. When people give to BSC, it shows they cared about BSC and they still care. They asked themselves “How can I pay it forward?” And hopefully one day I can pay it forward as well.” – Gabby Barbee ‘19, Media and Film Studies major
