What began as a BSC Alumni connection (i.e. Dr. Daniel Potts, Cognitive Dynamics) has turned into a dynamic, experiential learning opportunity for BSC students and the greater BSC community.
Embodied Labs is a virtual reality (VR), immersive training experience using a "Prepare-Embody-Reflect-Apply" framework and curriculum. Students can participate in a series of case studies (e.g.: Elder Safety & Wellbeing; Alzheimer's and Lewy-body dementias; Hospice Care). In the classroom, the VR experience gives students exposure to working with a cognitively impaired population before face-to-face interaction in medical, adult day care, and adult respite settings.
Psychology students use the VR modules to connect with members of our community who are either working with or have aging family members. A major goal of using EmbodiedLabs is to increase empathy and connection with older adults in our lives. This VR system can be used as a training resource not only for our students but for both family and professional caregivers in the community. Specifically, McCoy Adult Day Care and Founder's Place at St. Luke's Episcopal Church have both utilized the software for their respective communities.
Bringing this technology to BSC students will help them become better prepared to enter the workforce and providing care to cognitively impaired individuals as the next generation of medical professionals. Thank you for your support!
