In celebration of 65 years of our ginkgo trees, Birmingham-Southern College has designated 2023 as the “Year of the Gingko” and has identified eight important attributes of BSC students and faculty: Purpose, Connection, Resilience, Caring, Creativity, Leadership, Tenacity and Confidence.
During this year’s Forward Ever Day we are identifying giving opportunities for each of these attributes. Within the Caring attribute, it has been decided by friends and colleagues that no one better represents that ideal than the awesome Betty Gunn. To that effect we are creating a Forward Ever Day Legacy Gift in her honor!
No one is more identified with BSC or is more caring than Betty. A 1960 graduate of the college, Betty has been a reckoning force for Birmingham-Southern for a significant number of years. The spouse of the late Rev. Bill Gunn, ‘59, Betty promoted the College everywhere she lived as the wife of a Methodist minister. While the debate coach at Mountain Brook High School, she encouraged many of her students to attend Birmingham-Southern. During the school’s recent financial crisis, Betty has shown up making phone calls and writing mountains of letters to state legislators. Her two daughters, Amelia and Catherine are also both graduates of BSC as are at least two grandchildren! And, as many of you can attest, Betty has steadfastly kept up with her friends from 'Southern and her Pi Beta Phi sisters.
And now we can recognize Betty’s dedication to Birmingham-Southern by contributing to the Betty Gunn Legacy Gift, a non-restricted fund presented to the College in her honor, as part of Forward Ever Day on April 6, 2023. A specially designed printed piece will be presented to Betty containing the names of those who have contributed once the campaign ends.
