At Birmingham-Southern, the Department of Art and Art History helps students find their artistic voice through creating and studying art. The Department of Art and Art History offers multiple paths of study to prepare each student for a career in visual art. Studio classes allow students to explore different periods of art, create and write about their own work, develop an in-depth portfolio, and display their work.
“As a high school senior, I visited BSC. ‘Doc’ Slone [Dr. Lloyd Slone, the late professor emeritus] was there, and he made such an impression on me that I committed to Birmingham-Southern that day. The care and the individual attention of the professors is what really kept me there. I took everything I could. I took dance. I took theater. Economics. I almost flunked out of math – not my strong suit. I had an amazing relationship with my faculty advisor, [Professor Emeritus] Bob Tucker. He was such a guru, kind of like a Buddha of knowledge, just so grounded. Art students have a lot going on in their own head. And he was a strong, deeply-rooted man that opened my eyes to see through such a larger lens. I credit him with the path I’m on today as a sculptor.” -- Herb Williams ’96, renowned sculptor based in Nashville
