In the Spirit of Camaraderie - A Letter to Share Our Community

Dear friends, family, alumni, and fellow parents,

As most of you know, I am a proud PCD alum from the Class of 2005, a parent of a first grader, and I am honored to be serving as a new trustee to the school this year.

As we approach our annual Knight & Day of Giving, I wanted to share a moment from this winter that truly captured what this year’s PCD theme - camaraderie - means in action.

In December, our community was shaken by a tragic and frightening event at Brown University. For many of us - as parents, alumni, and friends of the school - it was a deeply unsettling time that brought fear and uncertainty close to home.

At the same time, PCD was preparing for the Holiday Tea, a beloved tradition that brings families, students, and faculty together through music, reflection, and celebration. In the days following the tragedy, there was understandable uncertainty about whether the event should go on at all.

What followed was something I will never forget.

PCD responded with clarity, compassion, and leadership. The school worked closely with local authorities, increased police presence on campus, implemented thoughtful safety protocols, and communicated openly with the community. Most importantly, every decision centered on the emotional and physical safety of our students.

When PCD chose to move forward with the Holiday Tea, they did so with intention - giving our community the opportunity to come together during a time when connection mattered most.

By moving forward, PCD allowed our children to be children - to feel joy, to feel safe, and to be shielded, even briefly, from the weight of the adult world. Our son, Mikey, had been counting down the days to his xylophone solo during Jingle Bell Rock, and being able to perform it meant so much to him. I was so grateful that he was able to take the stage. Watching him perform, and seeing his joy in that moment, truly meant everything to me.

While the entire program was beautiful, what brought me to tears was hearing the entire Lower School sing the PCD Alma Mater. As an alum and now a parent, it made me feel profoundly connected to my child and to this school - past, present, and future - in a way that is difficult to put into words.

PCD exemplifies camaraderie every day, but especially in moments like these. I am deeply grateful that the school’s number one priority was clear: keeping our children safe while supporting their emotional well-being.

In that same spirit, I hope you will consider participating in this year’s Knight & Day of Giving. Your support, at any level, helps ensure that PCD can continue to provide the safe, nurturing, and connected environment that makes moments like this possible for Mikey, and for the entire community.

Thank you for helping ensure that Mikey’s (and soon, Josephine’s!) school remains a place of strength, care, and camaraderie.

Warmly,
Christina Paolino
