About Dance on Film
Dance on Film is an annual collaborative event at UNCW that brings together dancers, filmmakers, and choreographers to create original dance films celebrating the art of movement on screen. Each project is student-led — from concept to choreography to final edit — giving participants the opportunity to experiment, grow, and tell powerful stories through motion and visual design.
This Year's Project: Scala
Our project, Scala, is a bold, student-led dance-film event inspired by the legendary Scala Cinema in London, a venue known for its quirky, experimental programming and underground cultural impact. The goal of Scala is to bring that same daring, unconventional spirit to UNCW by creating a hybrid showcase that merges dance, film, and live performance into an immersive campus experience.
While UNCW has thriving communities in film studies, dance, and the performing arts, there are few opportunities for true interdisciplinary collaboration. Scala fills this need by offering students a platform to experiment across art forms — giving choreographers, filmmakers, editors, and designers the chance to collaborate in unconventional ways. This project empowers students to take creative risks while also fostering community across disciplines. By reaching our $1,500 goal, we will be able to bring Scala to life and stand out as a signature arts event at UNCW — one that empowers student creativity, fosters collaboration across disciplines, and leaves a lasting impact on the campus arts community.
