The need for more trained nurses in the RCC region has reached a critical state. However, the RCC nursing program does not currently have the faculty capacity to accept all other eligible and worthy students who apply to our program. An endowment to support a faculty position in nursing will enable us to train more health care professionals to work in our community, improving our economy and the lives of all who call this region home.
If we are going to grow and thrive in the Northern Neck, we must address the need for better health care in this community. Our current situation presents many challenges:
• The College’s service area contains the four top most aged counties in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Facilities serving that population are expanding in the region and need certified heath care workers.
• The US Department of Health & Human Services identifies all 12 counties in RCC’s service region as Medically Underserved Areas – geographic areas with a lack of access to primary care services.
• The Department also predicts a 46% increase by 2030 in the number of nurses needed in Virginia to meet health care demands.
• There is a high demand for nurses in the service region’s two primary hospital systems – VCU and Bon Secours.
