About

UPDATE: We have received a $2,000 match donation from the Owens Foundation.

Your contribution to will help researchers and school children digitally dissect fishes through the creation of 3D computer models of specimens in the VIMS Nunnally Ichthyology Collection. Advances in technology are revolutionizing how collection specimens can be studied, especially tiny, larval fishes. Micro CT scanning (computed tomography) allows us to visualize internal structures such as muscles, bones, nerves, and more. It can even provide visualization of stomach contents, allowing researchers to learn about a fish’s diet. Scans can also help us learn about other aspects of an animal’s life history, such as the number and size of eggs in female specimens.

With $10,000, a W&M undergraduate student will be able to CT scan hundreds of our larval and juvenile fishes at the University of Florida’s state of the art CT scanning facility, and then develop 3D computer models that can be used by students and researchers to study these fishes.

With an additional $5,000, we will be able to print handheld 3D models of these fishes to be used in education and outreach at VIMS and the College of William & Mary. Additional models will be donated to area high schools (James City, York, and Gloucester counties) for use in biology classrooms and curricula. These anatomical models of larval fishes can be printed larger than life, rendering a half-inch specimen as a six inch model!

Please make a contribution and share information about our effort with your friends, neighbors, and colleagues!

A Look Inside Fund

To provide summer support for VIMS students to study and CT scan larval and juvenile fishes from the VIMS Nunnally Ichthyology Collection at VIMS or other institutions, such as the Florida Museum of Natural History, participating in the CT scanning of vertebrate diversity. Monies may also be used for developing and printing 3D models of the CT scans for education and outreach.

$15,000

Decrease the number of specimens that are CT-scanned and decrease the number of 3D models printed.

Increase the number of 3D models printed for education and outreach and increased funding for the Nunnally Ichthyology Collection at VIMS.

Only 3 Days Left!

Our Tribefunding Campaign ends Friday! With only three days left, please consider making a donation to support undergraduate research and K-12 education. If you donate now, your gift will count towards a $2,000 matching gift and two challenges! If we get 7 more donors I will give an additional $50, and if we get 17 more donors we'll receive an additional $250. There is no minimum donation and every dollar counts.

Many thanks to Beth Lerberg, Tabb High School Chemistry Teacher and VIMS alumna, for supporting A Look Inside!

A Look Inside has received a $2,000 match!

We are excited to announce that we've received a $2,000 matching gift from the Owens Foundation for "A Look Inside!" Now is the chance to double your donation. For every dollar raised between now and the end of the campaign, the Owens Foundation will match it (up to $2,000). With only 10 days left in our fund drive, please help us reach our goal!

And if you need further convincing, let freshman Khalil Russell, one of W&M's amazing 1693 Scholars, tell you why he's donated!

Thank you for your on-going support,

Sarah Huber

Thank you for your donation to A Look Inside!

Thank you for your donation to A Look Inside! We greatly appreciate your generosity and support for this project. As we begin the third week of our campaign, I would like to reach out and encourage you to spread the word about W&M Tribefunding. Please consider sharing links to the A Look Inside campaign via Facebook and Twitter. If you know of someone who would like to donate to our campaign, please encourage them to do so as a Challenge or Match (under the Advocate tab), so that we can make each dollar go further to support undergraduate research at W&M. I’ve gotten the ball rolling with a challenge to increase the number of new donors. New donors can give any amount, and no donation is too small! Even $10 will go a long way towards reaching our goal.

We are offering an incentive for larger donations. Donors who give $100 or more will receive an invitation to a behind-the-scenes tour of the Nunnally Ichthyology Collection.

I would also like to thank Dr. John Musick, VIMS Professor Emeritus and former Curator of the Nunnally Ichthyology Collection, for his support of A Look Inside. Jack has kindly put out a challenge to the VIMS community to support our crowdsourcing effort.

Thank you for your support,
Sarah Huber
