Title: Gerhard Brendler's 1983 biography of Martin Luther and its impact on histography in the German Democratic Republic
Department: History
Description: This Honors thesis is an in-depth analysis of Gerhard Brendler?s Martin Luther: Theology and Revolution in the context of heritage building in the German Democratic Republic. Written for the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther?s birth, Brendler?s biography demonstrated a massive shift of Luther?s image in the GDR from anti- revolution reactionary to an important thinker who prefigured socialist thought in his teachings. This historiographic change was taking place during the last decade of the GDR which was a massive time of social and political upheaval for the socialist society.
