Title: Beyond the Classroom: Demographic Predictors and Academic Successes of Milk and Cookies Program Participants
Department: Psychology
Description: Since 1999, the Milk and Cookies (MAC) program administered by Assisting Families of Inmates (AFOI) has addressed the needs of Richmond Public School (RPS) students impacted by parental incarceration. MAC's in-school programming encourages elementary school student's academic success and emotional competence. Since 2019, the Healthy Beginnings lab has partnered with AFOI to study the effect of MAC programming on participant's self perception and emotion regulation via quantitative surveys. Prior reports have suggested collecting background statistics and studying long-term success of participants would be an important extension of previous research. This project seeks to fill the analysis gap by gathering and analyzing data on MAC participants from two sources: AFOI to attain background demographic details like family characteristics, and RPS to attain long term academic outcomes like absenteeism. By attempting to find relevant correlations, this study could greatly inform AFOI and create a longer term data sharing plan for future analysis.
