About

Title: Discourse in and around Mainland Chinese, Taiwanese, and Hong Kong Cinema

Department: Anthropology

Description: This project will explore the ways in which people talk about Mainland Chinese, Taiwanese, and Hong Kong film and TV, as well as the ways Mainland Chinese, Taiwanese, and Hong Kong cinemas talk. Of particular interest will be how discussions, lectures, and films demonstrate, fit within, and relate to their larger social contexts, and if they do so as a result of or resulting in inequity or oppression. The project research will take place both in Taiwan and Mainland China(?), and will be done through participant observation in a Sinophone Cinemas 1980-2000 class and in Summer classes taught by the researcher; open-ended interviews in Chinese, English, and both with classmates, friends, and professors; and discourse analysis of movies, discussions, and film reviews. This research is significant because it will bring a justice-based and reflexive perspective to the study of films from which new, better methods of teaching might be constructed.
