Title: The ideology of racism by anti-racists: An analysis of the language ideologies of anti-hate groups
Department: Anthropology
Description: To expand anthropological understanding of racism and its effects on society, it is necessary to study not only the people who experience racism or intentionally target particular races, but also those leading the charge in combating racism. This research will address contemporary questions in anthropology like how to reconcile academic and non-academic views of race, measure the effectiveness of anti-racism, and have productive conversations about race. It is also potentially helpful for future teaching methods and organizational practices related to race. The project will analyze the ideologies that appear in the language of anti-racist groups, as well as how these ideologies may or may not impact their ideas of race, by using sociolinguistic data collection methods. It focuses on language because language ideology provides a platform to analyze how internal conscious and unconscious ideas interact with external relevant political and moral issues.
