Founded in 1938 with just 23 students, Western Carolina University’s Pride of the Mountains has grown into an award-winning ensemble of nearly 500 members—now one of the largest marching bands in the country. Known as the “world’s largest funk-rock band,” the Pride is recognized across the Southeast for its high-energy performances, featuring pop music, electric guitars, vocalists, and unforgettable field shows that energize Catamount Nation.
But behind the performances is a real challenge:
-
Each student pays $700–$1,000 annually to participate
-
These costs cover uniforms, travel, meals, instruction, equipment, and program operations
-
For some students, these expenses create a significant financial barrier
This initiative ensures that every student who earns a spot in the Pride has the opportunity to participate—regardless of financial circumstances.
How you can make an impact:
-
$1–$999: Supports a general scholarship fund to reduce financial barriers for as many students as possible
-
$1,000: Creates a more personal connection—you’ll be matched with a current band member in the section of your choice and see your impact firsthand
✨ On One Day for Western, you can help us extend the line—making sure no student is left on the sidelines due to cost.
