About

December 1, 2020 marks a celebration of humanities best qualities and bring our global community together through the power of philanthropy. GivingTuesday was launched in 2012 as a simple idea: to create a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past eight years, this idea has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. This year, Western Carolina University is encouraging our supporters to make a gift to the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning and the Whee Are One Fund.

The Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning provides students engaged learning experiences through meaningful service to the Western N.C. area. Donations will be put to immediate use to provide resources for WCU’s campus pantry, service opportunities with community partners, and educational stipends for student servant-leaders!

The Whee Are One fund is intended to provide immediate-use funds towards expenditures associated with the cost to compete, practice, and train during the 2020-21 academic year while WCU Athletics face the changes caused by the current pandemic. Donors to the Whee Are One fund will receive benefits tied to your Athletic involvement, see below for details.

Triple Your Support For The Center For Community Engagement And Service Learning

Three passionate alumni are leading the charge to complete a program endowment vital to sustaining experiential learning opportunities available to WCU students. The Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning (CCESL) exists to connect students with the community and to provide a conduit for the regional community to directly connect with our campus. When these connections align, something magical occurs – students learn more deeply, the community grows, and the institution fulfills its responsibility to our region. This year, in honor of Giving Tuesday (December 1), Dr. Carol Burton '87, Aaron Marshall '15, and Dr. Lane Perry '18 are offering their own matching and challenge gifts in support of the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning. Donate today and you could TRIPLE YOUR IMPACT!

Mike And Marsha Sullivan Issue The Whee Are One Fund Challenge!

In December 2019, Catamount Club members Mike and Marsha Sullivan led the charge on Giving Tuesday by issuing Catamount Nation a challenge gift which ultimately led to the Sullivan’s contributing $100,000 to the new field turf at Bob Waters Field. In the spirit of tradition, the Sullivan’s have stepped up once again in 2020! Mike and Marsha, whose daughter is a student at WCU, have issued a challenge gift of $30,000 for the Whee Are One Fund and Giving Tuesday initiative on December 1, 2020. The challenge has two components: 1) if Catamount Nation reaches the monetary goal of $20,000 on Giving Tuesday, the Sullivan’s will match dollar-for-dollar and donate $20,000 and, 2) if there are at least 100 donors on Giving Tuesday, the Sullivan’s will donate the remaining $10,000 to reach their overall challenge total of $30,000. Please join the Sullivan’s and WCU Athletics on Giving Tuesday 2020 as our student-athletes need your support now more than ever!
