Gifts to Support WVSOM's DOCARE Club contribute to...
DOCARE International is a medical outreach organization committed to advancing sustainable health care and health education in under-resourced communities across the globe. At the center of DOCARE’s mission is the belief that meaningful, long-term improvement in health outcomes comes not only from short-term medical relief, but from empowering communities through education, collaboration, and continuity of care. By integrating clinical service with teaching and cultural exchange, DOCARE works to strengthen local health systems while addressing immediate medical needs.
Global health outreach trips are at the heart of DOCARE International’s mission. These trips bring osteopathic medicine to medically underserved populations, emphasizing a holistic, patient-centered approach that considers the physical, social, and environmental factors affecting health. Through partnership with local providers, DOCARE volunteers bridge gaps in access to care while modeling sustainable practices that can be carried forward after the outreach teams depart.
This March, DOCARE is leading a multi-disciplinary team of 25 WVSOM students, as well as physicians, lab technicians, pharmacists, and volunteers on a medical aid trip to Peru. During this experience, our medical students will serve communities in Iquitos as well as rural villages along the Amazon River, traveling by boat to reach indigenous populations with limited or no access to routine medical care. Working under physician supervision, we will provide clinical services, offer menstruation education to young women in partnership with Days for Girls, safe-sex education to boys, and gain invaluable exposure to global health challenges and culturally responsive care.
Importantly, all of our chapter’s fundraising efforts directly support this mission. Every dollar raised is allocated toward purchasing medications and essential medical supplies for Peru. Through service, education, and responsible stewardship, DOCARE International and its WVSOM chapter exemplify a commitment to compassionate, sustainable global health!
