About

Wilderness Medicine

The Wilderness Medicine program at WVSOM offers students hands‑on training in treating injuries and medical emergencies that occur in outdoor and austere environments. Through a specialized rotation featuring lectures and field‑based experiences, students learn skills such as search and rescue, pediatric wilderness care, managing lightning and near‑drowning injuries, heat‑related illnesses, and more. The program gives future physicians practical insight into outdoor‑related injuries and prepares them to confidently care for patients both in traditional clinical settings and in rugged, resource‑limited situations.
