Gifts to Friars' Society Alumni Chapter contribute to...
The Friars' Society at West Chester University was founded in 1937 by 8 senior men: Bill Kohn, Joe Carney, Frank Beardsley, Ted Williams, Bob Williams, Frank Sharpe, “Tiny” Walters, and Nels Harris. All of these outstanding gentlemen have now passed, with Nels Harris being the last Founding Brother to leave us. The Friars', whose name originates from the French Franciscan Brotherhood, originated as a small organization devoted to serving the surrounding community.
Since our foundation, each brother has represented our characteristics of leadership, honor, virtue, character and friendship. Leaders from all campus pillars have been invited into the circle, including student government officers, Greek life leaders, student athletes, multicultural student leaders, and more.
Since 1997, we have awarded at least one $500 scholarship annually, and beginning in 2010, the scholarship was increased to $1,000 thanks to the generosity of alumni and honorary brothers like yourself.
We are pleased to announce our most recent scholarship recipient, Nicholas Kaeser, a History Major with a teaching certificate who anticipates graduating Fall 2027 semester. Nicholas mentioned how the Friars have changed him to become a more helpful, giving, and honest person. His favorite service project has been the candidate bake sale where he was able to include his grandmother who baked and donated her cookies that were used in the sale. He loved that he could include his family into a service project.
Continuing the legacy, the Friars' Society Alumni Chapter supports multiple scholarships and the activity of the current student organization. Your contribution directly impacts our Friars on campus and allows us to continue to serve WCU and the community.
