Computer Science Annual Fund

The Department of Computer Science at Wayne State University plays a vital role in advancing knowledge through innovative research and high-impact educational programs. By fostering strong collaborations across disciplines and with industry partners, the department leads progress in areas such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, mobility, and cybersecurity. Its work empowers students and faculty to address real-world challenges and drive technological innovation in Detroit and beyond.

Cyber Defense Club

The Cyber Defense Club is a student-led organization focused on building cybersecurity skills through real-world practice and collaboration. Open to all students whether just starting out or looking to strengthen foundational skills, we offer hands-on training through workshops, technical sessions, and networking opportunities with industry professionals. Members work together to prepare for cybersecurity competitions such as the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (NCCDC), gaining practical experience in defending networks under pressure. We also create and host our own student-led global Capture the Flag (CTF) competition, designing original challenges that test skills like hacking, puzzle-solving and digital forensics.

Hands-on Curriculum and Capstone Experience

In the capstone course, students are working on real-world solutions with industry professionals and laying the groundwork for successful careers. Student teams partner with companies on a semester-long project to develop a business solution. The project encompasses the full product development life cycle, including design, implementation and testing.

Students learn how to:

  • Create innovative applications and processes to solve real-world problems.
  • Develop strong project management, leadership and teamwork skills.
  • Make a direct impact on communities and organizations, all while gaining valuable experience that will set them apart in their careers.

Undergraduate Research Experience

Undergraduate research allows students to gain practical experience through interdisciplinary research with real-world impact. Students focus on the application of research principles to solve complex problems through the delivery of innovative, cutting-edge solutions as well as gain an understanding of the roles involved. Students work individually with a sponsoring faculty member from the area of their research.

Distinguished Speaker Series

The department’s Distinguished Speaker Series brings leading scholars, innovators, and industry leaders to campus each year, enriching the academic environment and inspiring students and faculty. These high-profile lectures foster intellectual exchange, strengthen external collaborations, and enhance the department’s national and international visibility. The series plays a key role in elevating the department’s reputation and contributing to its standing in rankings and research impact.
