Support Vanderbilt University School of Medicine Basic Sciences on our 10th Giving Day
Anchored in Discovery. Building what’s next.
This Giving Day, we celebrate two important milestones. There have been 10 Giving Days of impact across Vanderbilt, and it has been 10 years since the formation of Vanderbilt School of Medicine Basic Sciences within Vanderbilt, highlighting Vanderbilt’s long-term commitment to excellence in research and education and providing a world-class home for discovery science to drive biomedical innovation and improve human health. What we are anchored in shapes what we build next. Each Giving Day, our community comes together to fuel bold ideas, expand opportunities and invest in what matters most. Giving Day is powered by thousands of donors who have shown up year after year. Ten years in—and the impact continues.
At the School of Medicine Basic Sciences, we are anchored in discovery—and Giving Day strengthens that foundation. Biomedical research breakthroughs made in our labs are actively contributing to advancing early disease detection methods, increasing effectiveness of treatment options, and improving patient outcomes for some of the most challenging human diseases. Simply put: Research saves lives. Your support directly contributes to priorities such as:
- The newly established Clinical Translation Fund, which exists to bridge the gap between the moment of discovery in a lab to the treatment, drug, diagnostic, or therapy that directly benefits patients. This fund was created in honor of Dr. Larry Marnett’s 50 years of outstanding contributions and leadership in academia.
- Funding for the Roger Chalkley, Ph.D. Critical Need Fund, which directly supports Ph.D. students who are in a moment of crisis to help them continue their studies.
- The School of Medicine Basic Sciences annual fund, which fuels our mission to study the prevention and treatment of disease. Your gift is an investment in our trainees and faculty who are uncovering new knowledge, innovating, and putting their expertise to use for the good of all humanity.
- The Simple Beginnings Fund, which welcomes new Ph.D. students in the biomedical sciences each year by providing a lab coat and well-wishes as they join our community.
- Our world-class laboratories and departments that provide trainees the opportunity to advance research, to design and develop new techniques and to collaborate across disciplines.
- Vanderbilt Institute for Therapeutic Advances (VITA), which represents the next frontier in translational biomedical research at Vanderbilt. VITA’s mission is to accelerate the discovery of transformative therapies to bring novel treatments to patients faster and tackle diseases overlooked by traditional drug development.
- Stanley Cohen Innovation Fund, which provides financial security through discovery grants for our forward-thinking faculty so that they can take the risks necessary to address the most difficult biomedical research challenges.
Make Your Gift Go Further
On Giving Day, your impact can be amplified through matches and challenges:
- School of Medicine Basic Sciences Donor Challenge When 100 donors make a gift to any area of School of Medicine Basic Sciences, a $50,000 gift will be unlocked to the Clinical Translation Fund, which exists to bridge the gap between the moment of discovery in a lab to the treatment, drug, diagnostic, or therapy that directly benefits patients. This fund was created in honor of Dr. Larry Marnett’s 50 years of outstanding contributions and leadership in academia.
- Dean’s Power Hour From 9 to 10 a.m. CT, Dean Kuriyan will match dollar-for-dollar all gifts made up to $5,000 to the School of Medicine Basic Sciences with a gift to the Roger Chalkley, Ph.D. Critical Need Fund, which provides assistance to Ph.D. students facing unexpected challenges.
