Restore the Whitehead Camellia Trail
Help Preserve a Living Piece of VSU History
For generations, the Whitehead Camellia Trail has been a place of quiet beauty at Valdosta State University. Tucked among pine trees on the north end of campus, the trail has offered students, alumni, and visitors a space for reflection, learning, and connection with nature.
In 2024, Hurricane Helene changed that.
The storm destroyed more than half of the Whitehead Camellia Trail, leaving behind significant damage to a treasured part of VSU’s Walking Trail System. What was once a living garden of history now needs the support of the Blazer community to bloom again.
A Legacy Worth Restoring
The Whitehead Camellia Trail began as a Christmas gift in 1944, when Mrs. Jewel Whitehead donated 150 camellia plants to Georgia State Woman’s College. More than a donation, it was a labor of love. Mrs. Whitehead personally planted the camellias and spent the rest of her life caring for the trail, adding new flowers and tending the old ones year after year.
Her gift became a lasting symbol of generosity, stewardship, and connection to campus life. Today, restoring the trail honors not only her legacy, but the countless memories made along its paths.
