Dr. Lillian Portenier joined the UW faculty in 1925, later becoming a full professor and chair of the Psychology department.
When Dr. Portenier joined the department, it was headed by June Etta Downey. Funds were far from abundant and the teaching load was heavy, but Downey had established a tradition of excellence in both research and teaching, and Dr. Portenier continued in that tradition. In 1934, after earning her doctorate in psychology from Columbia University, Dr. Portenier was promoted to associate professor of psychology and in 1939 to professor. During the World War II years of 1942ā44, she also served as acting head of the department and as acting head of Student Personnel Services. Her major interests in psychology were related to mental testing, mental health, and child psychology. As well as teaching in these fields, she was active in applying the scientific method to society's problems.
Her legacy gift goes to a variety of student causes in the department. It helps recognize outstanding undergraduates each year at our graduation. This fund also helps dozens of graduate and undergraduate students attend professional conferences each year, an important part of their professional development. It helps to offset the costs of doing thesis and doctoral research.
Your gift to this fund directly benefits students and their activities. Thank you for considering supporting the department and the legacy of a giant in the field.
