My name is Will Flagg. As a fourth-generation University of Wyoming alum who grew up right here in this state, I have a strong commitment to our students. It’s a profound honor to serve as an assistant lecturer in the Department of Music instructing in Audio Engineering and Music Production—work that is a direct continuation of the mission behind Julian’s Fund.
My own audio career was always intertwined with Julian Abas's, and I considered him a friend from the start. We attended the same audio school but did not meet until working at the same studio in Nashville. We immediately hit it off, as we were both from Wyoming. Years later we worked side-by-side as student technicians at Associated Students Technical Services (ASTEC) before he became the staff coordinator. I think of him and his incredible gift for connecting with students often, and I strive every day to be as skilled an audio engineer and as genuine a mentor as he was.
In our Bachelor of Arts Music Industry Studies program, our goal is to prepare students for the real world of work and artistic creation in music production. The support from Julian’s Fund enriches this goal, allowing us to purchase world class equipment, reimburse students for invaluable work-experience opportunities, and bring in expert performers and production specialists.
This past year, we used the fund to purchase cymbals and other accessories to complement Julian’s own drum set, which his father John so generously donated to the program. This not only helps students understand the sound of quality instruments but gives them hands-on experience in miking and recording them. We’ve also been able to support several concerts on campus, which created opportunities for students to both perform and tech live music, enriching the campus experience for everyone. In years prior, this fund aided in equipment purchases such as a digital mixing console and lighting equipment. It’s even been used to help with moving costs for graduating students.
Looking ahead, we are currently working on a major purchase—a new sound system that will give students real-world mixing experience. Following that, we will focus on outfitting a dedicated recording and music production room for student use, which will create a hub for the next generation of creators in the UW music department.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your continued support of Julian’s Fund. You are helping us make a meaningful and lasting impact right here at the University of Wyoming, honoring a legacy that continues to inspire us all.
