Professor John “Doc” Donnelly was a longtime member of the University of Vermont faculty and a widely respected educator within UVM’s environmental and natural resources programs. Over the course of his career, he became known for his student-centered teaching approach and his commitment to experiential and interdisciplinary education.
In 1999, Doc was named Vermont Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, a recognition honoring his impact as an educator and mentor to generations of students. Colleagues and former students frequently described him as an accessible and deeply engaged teacher who encouraged active participation and critical thinking both in and beyond the classroom.
Doc’s influence remained a lasting part of the UVM community even after his retirement. The Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources continued to honor his legacy through the annual “Doc Donnelly Day” welcome-back gathering, celebrating the sense of community and connection he helped foster during his decades at the university.
Sadly, Doc passed away in April 2026. His impact on the University of Vermont and the generations of students he taught and mentored will continue to be felt for years to come.
To honor Doc’s legacy, faculty from the Rubenstein School have come together to establish the John “Doc” Donnelly Memorial Fund. The initial goal of the fund is to plant a memorial tree in Doc’s honor. Raising $2,500 will cover the planting of the tree, a commemorative plaque, installation, and ongoing maintenance. We will confirm with any donors to this fund how the donations are ultimately used.
