For more than 30 years, the Stark (formally Genetic) Science Learning Center has been making easy-to-understand science content and fun interactive activities to teach high school and middle school students.
This year, we’re offering exciting options for you to support our legacy of science education and propel the center into a bright future:
Choose to support:
- Summer Science Day, our in-person all-ages science festival
- A STEM summer camp for ages 10-14, debuting this year!
- Updating our classic interactive activities for modern web technologies
- Providing multiple language support for our activities, ensuring that everyone has access to high-quality science education.
Learn more about each of these opportunities below:
- Summer Science Day
Last year, more than 1,000 people gathered for our first-ever Summer Science Day! They touched pig lungs, toured active science labs, and extracted DNA from peas.
This year, we’re planning a bigger and better event! Your donations help us get the word out about this unique science experience. You’ll also help us with the supplies to put on a smooth, easy-to-navigate visitor experience.
- Summer Camp
Synthetic snot, chemistry secrets, and how to prepare for a vampire apocalypse - our debut summer camps provide experiences students won’t find anywhere else. Led by an experienced teacher and Disneyland educator, our week-long summer camps help students explore STEM careers, connect science with art, and unlock their own creativity.
Your donations enrich the students’ experience. You’ll help us purchase iPads that will help students tell their own scientific stories in multiple creative ways.
- Reviving old activities
Our first website launched more than 30 years ago, and the web has changed a lot since then. As web technology has evolved, some of our classic and well-loved activities haven’t been able to keep up.
With your support, we can work to revive these iconic activities, including apps that simulate senses like sight, hearing, touch, and balance using your phone’s own sensors and capabilities. Let’s get these educational tools back into students’ hands!
- Multiple language support
Science is for everyone! Visitors to our site, learn.genetics.utah.edu, come from all over the world. Most of our materials, however, are available only in English. AI has introduced a new era of rapid translation capability, but the words we use to describe science are chosen very carefully for accuracy, accessibility, and avoidance of misconceptions. We care about how we teach science, and we want to be sure we get it right.
Your gift helps us produce translations of our science content into more languages. For every language we add, another group can learn about science, genetics, and health in words they understand. This expands the University of Utah’s educational impact into even more corners of the world.
