Utah Prison Education Project - Student Center
At the Utah Prison Education Project’s Student Center, incarcerated Education Advocates who are earning their bachelor's degree at the University of Utah are strengthening education for learners across the Utah State Correctional Facility. Six Education Advocates, paid at the same rate as peer tutors on the U’s main campus, support students at every stage of their educational journey. They tutor, mentor, lead workshops, and build community, making the Student Center a place of connection, trust, and possibility. Grounded in the belief that education is a right, not a privilege, the Student Center welcomes everyone—no matter their background or where they are on their learning journey.
In its first year of operation, the Student Center supported more than a dozen women in earning GEDs, strengthened recruitment and retention in high school and community college courses, and served more than 250 incarcerated individuals, representing over half of the unit’s population.
These Giving Days, we’re raising funds for art supplies that Education Advocates use to lead cardmaking, painting, and craft workshops. These creative spaces often spark a first step into learning, especially for people who never imagined themselves as students. Making art builds confidence, eases stress, and brings people together. Your gift puts simple but powerful tools such as paper, paint, and craft materials, into the hands of leaders inside who are opening doors to education grounded in dignity and joy.
