Small Things Make a Big Difference: Fund Support Devices for People With Vision Loss

Imagine waking up one day and realizing that the world around you has become blurry or dark. The faces of loved ones, the beauty of nature, and the simple joys of reading a book or cooking a meal are now challenges you never anticipated.

This is the reality for many people in our community adjusting to life with permanent vision loss; without support, these friends, family members, and neighbors are at risk of becoming isolated, depressed, and dependent.

On this #UGivingDay, your donation between $5 and $100 to the John A. Moran Eye Center Patient Support Program will provide patients with low vision in need with specialized tools and technologies that promote their independence and safety.

Why do these patients need your help? Many of them are older adults who live on fixed incomes. Others may be experiencing early-onset blindness that has forced them to rely on disability benefits. Working-aged people with vision loss can face challenges finding jobs or encounter pay inequities.

With a $5 donation, you can provide a patient with:

• Auto squeeze eye drop bottle attachment for users with weak or arthritic fingers
• Auto drop eye bottle attachment to ensure accurate application of eye drops
• Bump dot tactile markers to label microwaves, washers, ovens, etc.
• Bold line writing paper pads
• Signature guide or writing guide to be used to help someone who can’t see to keep their lines straight
• A pack of bold, no-bleed-through pens

With a $10 donation, you can provide a patient with:

• High-contrast, reusable clip-on labels for medication bottles
• An LED task light featuring adjustable hue and brightness
• Fit-over filter glasses to reduce eye discomfort from light sensitivity (photophobia) and enhance visual clarity
• A scoping monocular to help see distant objects, which can also be reversed to enlarge a restricted visual field
• A graphite-folding white cane
• A Jitterbug Flip2, an easy-to-use flip phone with big buttons

With a $25 donation, you can provide a patient with:

• An LED task light featuring adjustable hue and brightness

With a $30 donation, you can provide a patient with:

• Fit-over filter glasses to reduce eye discomfort from light sensitivity (photophobia) and enhance visual clarity

With a $50 donation, you can provide a patient with:

• A scoping monocular to help see distant objects, which can also be reversed to enlarge a restricted visual field
• A graphite-folding white cane
• A Jitterbug Flip2, an easy-to-use flip phone with big buttons

With a $70 donation, you can provide a patient with:

• A talking voice recorder

With a $100 donation, you can provide a patient with:

• Progressive lenses for eyeglasses

These devices will be directly provided to patients with low vision who cannot afford to purchase them. Your support can help someone continue to work, pursue hobbies, and engage independently within our community.
