The Volunteer Organization Involving Community, Education, and Service (VOICES) is raising funds to support the Student Involvement Center’s Alternative Break Program, an experiential learning opportunity that empowers UTSA students to explore social issues and make a meaningful impact through hands-on service.
Since 1994, when 20 students traveled to Reynosa, Mexico, for the first Alternative Break experience, the program has provided weeklong service trips grounded in education, reflection, and authentic community partnership. During university breaks, groups of students travel to different communities to engage with local issues, gain insight into complex social challenges, and volunteer their time and talents to help address those needs.
In recent years, Alternative Break trips have focused on environmental justice and conservation, affordable housing, children with special needs, hunger and homelessness, and animal welfare. In 2025 alone, Roadrunners provided 3,157 hours of service to more than 60 community partners across the San Antonio area—demonstrating UTSA’s ongoing commitment to civic engagement and community impact.
Alternative Break – Alternative Break in New Orleans was one of the most impactful experiences of my time at UTSA. I was surrounded by passionate individuals who showed me that stewardship goes beyond the environment—it’s about community, resilience, and serving something bigger than yourself. I left with a renewed sense of purpose and a stronger commitment to fostering belonging and positive change within our Roadrunner community. Lauren Sawvel, Participant for Spring 25 AB, NOLA
Give today to help VOICES and the Student Involvement Center continue empowering Roadrunners to meet community needs, deepen their understanding of social issues, and carry forward UTSA’s commitment to service and engagement. 💙🧡
